Truly building community spirit, Service bénévole de l’Est de Montréal (SBEM) places volunteerism and mutual aid in the heart of East End Montreal since 1982. As a volunteer center, SBEM provides individuals a wide range of opportunities for community service and help organizations to recruit, manage and retain volunteers. We serve over 200 non-profit, community-based and public agencies and more than 1000 volunteers annually, all of whom contribute to enhance voluntary action in East End Montreal.
SBEM is a charitable, non-profit organization which receives major financial support from Centraide of Greater Montreal and the Agence de la santé et des services sociaux de Montréal. SBEM serves communities on the island of Montreal, just east of St. Laurent Boulevard all the way to the eastern tip of the island excluding Rivières-des-Prairies and Montréal-Nord. This territory covers more than 40% of the population of Montreal.
Want to put your skills and knowledge to the service of your community? Welcome to SBEM. Come visit us, or surf our website. We at SBEM will inform you of, and put you in touch with, organizations or events that complement your interests, skills, talents – and expectations. If you are representing a community organization or a public agency, we can help you find the volunteers needed to create success!

- Develop volunteer and community service by identifying community need and mobilizing volunteer action, by providing information on volunteerism and consulting with community partners.
- Welcome and support volunteers to help them give and gain the best of themselves. Discuss their interests; explore their abilities before connecting them to the proper organization. Follow-up contact after a few weeks favours positive and durable community service.
- Help voluntary and community organizations to define their needs; recruit, select and refer volunteers; offer consultation services in volunteer management so that can be established a fruitful, harmonious exchange between organizations and volunteers.
- Manage and provide direct services involving volunteers, who may intervene in various sectors of human activity depending on community needs. SBEM offers a special service, accompaniment and transportation to medical appointments, for adults with loss of autonomy and low revenue.
